Letters from Washington Middle School, Long Beach, CA

Received April 14, 2010

Dear Sandy,

Enclosed are some pretty amazing letters! I was very impressed with my students’ letters and the response to your presentation. You really made an impact. Many teachers also told me that day how impressed they were with your presentation and the story.

Thank you again for donating your time and for making an impact on so many students’ lives. You are incredible. We would love to have you come back. If you are ever in this area again, please call me.

Respectfully,

Joylyn Souter (teacher)

From the students:

“I didn’t know that the Germans killed a lot of people and just because of their religion.”

“I’d like to tell you that you’ve made me think in a different way. Before I heard your father’s story, I didn’t think someone who was confined with no way out, with the odds against him so slim, that he could still have hope.”

“I was touched that your father was alone the whole time because he lost his family. I was touched when people helped him when he was sick and gave him extra food to get his strength back. When he was in the cold in the snow, I thought he would be killed, but the guard didn’t kill him. It is important for people today not to take life for granted; they should love life, live it, have fun, and have respect for others.”

“Thank you for coming to our school and talking about your father. It really inspired me.”

“If one man did great evil, one person can do great good. This is my idea of the presentation and the message I received from it. Thank you for this chance to hear the story of your father, and his brave story of survival and his dream to live on and to lead a successful life.”
